About Mountain Wise
Welcome to the Minority Diabetes Prevention Program, a dedicated initiative by MountainWise serving Haywood County, NC. Our mission is to empower adults aged 18 and over to take control of their health and reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes through a supportive, inclusive, and educational wellness program. Our free wellness program is designed to fit your lifestyle, offering a one-hour class each week for the first six months, followed by monthly classes for the next six months. Over the course of a year, participants engage in interactive sessions that combine the CDC-approved Prevent Type 2 curriculum with light movement and practical health education. Each class is led by a trained Life-Style Coach and Personal Trainer, ensuring you receive expert guidance every step of the way.
We understand that motivation and support are key to lasting change. That’s why we offer valuable incentives for every class, including cooking utensils, storage containers, cookbooks, workout equipment, gym memberships, and more. Throughout the year, you’ll also have the opportunity to join extra events like outdoor picnics, short hikes, and healthy food preparation workshops, all designed to build community and reinforce healthy habits.
Qualifying for the program is straightforward—factors such as high blood pressure, extra body weight, or limited physical activity may make you eligible.
